Chapter 321: Extra 5: Ravi’s Sick Day
Chapter 321: Extra 5: Ravi’s Sick Day
His head was on a soft pillow. It felt wrong. Last thing Ravi remembered he had been drinking on the roof.
He should get up. The first thing every Sentinel should do when they enter a new one is to blend in and learn about the world. He should get up, register his address and name.
It has been a day since he entered this Earth, and there was so much to do.
Ravi tried to sit up but his extremities were already trembling from the cold that washed over his whole body. He had no choice but to burrow back under the covers.
The covers... There was a lingering sweet scent of vanilla that accompanied the chills.
Ravi drifted off to sleep.
**
"Shouldn’t you be at the workshop?" Lana asked as Safe walked into the house.
He shook his head, "I heard he was sick so I wanted to take a..." His eyes widened and he froze.
Two skeletons stood in the kitchen. One was taller around six feet while the other was slight.
The smaller one faced the stove, finger bones wrapped loosely around a wooden spoon stirring something in the pot while the taller one was chopping a fat chicken.
Sage closed his eyes for a second and then opened them. Sure, there were skeletons in the kitchen.
What action should be the best to take right now?
"Too late to scream," Malik said, using his finger to read something on a slate.
"There... You..." Sage didn’t know whether he should point at the skeletons or at Malik.
"Keep it down." Arlen collected a bowl from one of the skeletons, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, and headed up the staircase.
"Malik..."
"Don’t look down on them. That one is Marcus Gavius Apicius and the other is Zhang Dongguan who served... Forgotten but some emperor. They said that after eating his food the emperors of Xi and Wei started a war with him as the prize. Ravi is ill, he must have the best."
Sage looked at the skeletons, he could not wrap his head around it so he did not care. Sitting next to Malik, he could not hide his worry, "Ravi had never been sick before. Would he be okay? Shouldn’t we take him to the hospital?"
"It is just a fever, he would be fine."
Thump! Thump! Thump! A steady heartbeat echoed in his ears as Ravi woke up again. Someone was here! In his house? Had someone followed him here? Who? The sentinels? Demons? Had he not done anything in over a century? Why wouldn’t they still let him be?
Ravi felt both rage and grievance. He struggled to sit up. Ravi decided. He would kill anyone who dared to enter this house. His eyes took a golden sheen, and the air crackled with energy.
"Easy! Easy, love! You have a fever. Don’t move too much."
The voice was warm. Some realms had no sun, creating a cold atmosphere. Ravi would at times start a fire in the middle of nowhere. Listening to this person, it was almost as if he were sitting around such a fire on a warm night. He unexpectedly had a feeling of peace and security, where there was no need for him to think about anything at all.
Ah!! He suddenly didn’t want to kill him. The golden sheen in his eyes faded and his blurry eyes struggled to make out the face in front of him. His head was pounding terribly.
"You can’t throw up again, okay. You have to eat something." The voice spoke in a low, gentle tone. It was a little unclear and muffled, as if eating something. But it was precisely that quality that made it delightful.
And the voice sounded worried. For him. Was he hallucinating? Had he already been poisoned?
"Are you feeling worse?" Arlen held his hand with one hand while he reached into Ravi’s collar to feel his body. At first touch, it felt burning hot, but upon further checking, it wasn’t too high, as if a small furnace inside was slowly roasting him, causing his skin to have a faint reddish hue.
"They said the honey water should help."
Even though he trusted Malik, Arlen had still researched the meal the skeletons had made. The honey was locust honey, fresh and sweet, known for its ability to moisten dryness and clear heat, and it was also gentle on the stomach.
"Drink a little, okay?"
He tried to feed Ravi but Ravi turned away.
He was not surprised at the wary, hostile look that Ravi had him. The fever made his mind blurry, Malik said that his memories seemed to be be muddled.
Ravi’s throat was so dry but he refused to drink the water, "You’d better kill me." Or else.
Arlen pursed his lips, something must be wrong with him if he found such a feisty, vigilant Ravi so cute. He looks like a cat with sharpened claws.
"If you don’t drink, how would I kill you." Seeing Ravi still looking away, he chuckled, "If you don’t drink, I would drink it then kiss you. What do you think?"
Ravi widened his eyes, the headache making him wonder if he had misheard.
"You!"
The golden sheen appeared in his eyes again before fading. Fine.
He pressed his lips to the spoon and Arlen began to feed him the water spoon by spoon.
"It is a pity. I really wanted to kiss you. "
Ravi, who was usually so striking, now had a beautiful flush on his face due to the fever. Even his eyelids were tinged with a soft pink from the heat.
Ravi tried to push this scoundrel away with his palm but the other caught it, "You can beat me when you feel better, okay?"
Feeling the man’s hot air against his hand, Ravi felt a shiver run through his entire body but couldn’t bear to pull his hand away.
"Is your stomach feeling better? Should I get something for you to eat?"
Ravi replied, "I don’t want to eat."
"Then sleep for now, and eat when you wake up." Arlen touched his forehead and added, "I’ll stay with you."
At first, Ravi was tense, guarding himself against this intruder who wanted to kiss him. But as the fever set in, with his head dizzy and his stomach nauseous, he soon fell into a deep, dark sleep.
The next time Ravi woke up, it was already 2 in the morning and the rowdy house was now as silent as the back of a church house.
He removed the towel from his forehead and opened his eyes. The thermos, the tablets and a cup of water explained the situation to him.
The consequences of modifying his body last month. His previous body had been extra terrestrial, he could not grow old. Ravi had made it more human and it came with human-like problems. He yawned.
He had a weak headache but felt hungrier than tired
Most of the room was still dark, which coupled with this season’s gloomy chill only made one unconsciously want to sleep in a bit longer.
Ravi didn’t close his eyes again. He lowered his head, silently watching the person sleeping next to him.
It was so worth it.
"Love?" The voice was filled with a languid sleepiness.
"You.."
Before he could talk, Arlen pulled him into his arms, using the quilt to wrap around the two of them, "Sleep, love."
A small smile curved Ravi’s lips, a warm cocoon around his heart.
Something he had never imagined possible was now an ordinary day. Tomorrow would be the same. Next year. A decade. Six decades. He would have so many ordinary days like this with Arlen.
Ravi closed his eyes, the heartbeat against his ears luring him into a deep sleep.
