Chapter 58 Falling to Earth (1)
Chapter 58 Falling to Earth (1)
The stream flowed past Luo Zai Shui's fingertips; she was still somewhat dazed when she woke up.
My head hurts so much, where am I?
She vaguely remembered that the talisman she was carrying protected her after she fell into the abyss. The abyss was full of monsters with gaping maws, but she couldn't use any spiritual power and could only risk plunging into the dark currents at the bottom of the abyss.
By the time we reached the shore, we were already here.
She sat up, the Rainbow Sword lying to one side, its golden light fading.
The claw marks from the demonic beast on her body had turned white from being soaked in the stream, and the white bones were faintly visible. She touched her waist and found that her storage bag was also missing. She could only tear off the hem of her clothes and bandage it up simply.
Luo tried to stand up several times, but failed each time. She sat down dejectedly on the shore, thinking to herself, "My master and the others should be able to find me soon, right?"
The red string on her hand had lost its effect due to the lack of spiritual power. The spiritual power around her was thin, so she couldn't use the sound transmission talisman to send a message to her senior brothers for the time being.
Her mind was in a mess. The faint heat from the thumb-sized stone in her arms startled her awake. Luo took out the so-called magical artifact, examined it carefully, but ultimately found nothing, so he had to hide it in his sleeve again.
Just as she was about to fall asleep again, a piercing cry for help roused her from her slumber.
"Help me—"
How could there be anyone here?
The sound grew closer, and Luo Zai Shui struggled to her feet, hiding in the bushes nearby.
"what--"
A woman in tattered clothes was rushing to escape when she tripped over a pebble and fell to the ground. She hurriedly stood up, but in her panic, she fell to the ground again.
Luo held her breath in the water, her mind racing as she carefully analyzed the scene before her.
The woman was followed by several thugs who, seeing her in such a sorry state, let out disgusting, lewd laughter.
“Madam Shen, your short-lived husband has been dead for so many years. Why don’t you come with our third brother? It’s easier for a widow and her child to make a living.”
"That's right, if you go with my third brother, I guarantee you'll live a life of luxury and never have to do laundry for others again. Don't you agree?"
"yes--"
Just as the man touched the woman, Luo Zai Shui stepped forward and kicked the man away.
"Damn it, who—"
He clutched his chest, about to reprimand the arrogant fool who dared to ruin his plans, but upon seeing Luo Zai Shui's appearance, he leered and narrowed his eyes.
Luo had an injury on her leg. She hadn't used her full strength in that attack, but the wound started bleeding again, and her face turned frighteningly pale.
"Oh, what a delicate young lady! How dare you be all alone in this desolate wilderness? Do you want your brothers to pamper you?"
Luo was in so much pain in the water that he couldn't speak, so he could only hold the Long Rainbow Sword horizontally in front of him as a threat.
"It's not good for a young girl like you to be wielding swords and spears. Come, let your brother take a look at you—"
Just as the man's hand was about to reach out, Luo Zai Shui choked him with an elbow strike, stopping him from saying anything more.
Seeing this, the others rushed forward to help.
"Damn it, if I don't teach you a lesson, I'm not a grandpa today! Brothers, charge!"
Luo Zai Shui had already determined that these people were just ordinary people. Although he couldn't use his spiritual power now, it was still more than enough to deal with them.
"roll--"
The men, their faces bruised and swollen, scrambled away, not forgetting to utter a final threat: "You just wait!"
"Thank you, young lady."
The woman, with tears in her eyes, thanked her repeatedly.
"Of course..."
A wave of dizziness washed over her, and Luo Zai Shui collapsed to the ground.
"Girl! Girl! Ah, blood..."
Luo Zai Shui felt a pang of regret. She wished she hadn't attacked so forcefully. She couldn't have stayed conscious until her senior brothers arrived. What would have happened if they had encountered danger?
When she woke up again, she was on a wooden bed.
"Ah, young lady, you're awake?"
The woman brought in a bowl of chicken soup.
Luo Zai Shui then realized that she had changed into a clean and refreshing set of clothes.
"I changed your clothes for you. I washed the one you were wearing. I'll mend it for you when it's dry. Eat something to tide you over first."
Luo Zai Shui took the bowl of chicken soup, but dared not take a bite.
The woman thought she was being disdainful, so she nervously rubbed the hem of her clothes and explained, "Don't worry, this chicken is a home-raised chicken, freshly killed, guaranteed to be fresh. Drink it while it's hot, the doctor said you lost too much blood and need to replenish it."
Luo took a careful sniff of the water and, finding no unusual smell, took a sip: "Thank you."
The chicken soup was a little different from the chicken soup she usually drank. It seemed to have only a little salt in it and no other ingredients. It was quite delicious. Luo Zai Shui was indeed hungry after working for a while, so she simply drank a few more mouthfuls.
The woman smiled as she watched her drink the bowl of chicken soup: "I must thank you for saving my life, young lady. If it weren't for your help, I..."
Before she could finish speaking, the woman's eyes welled up with tears again. Feeling somewhat embarrassed, she wiped away her tears and changed the subject: "Where are you from, young lady? How did you come back to Jizhou? And where did you get this injury? The doctor said that the wound must not get wet and must be carefully tended to."
Looking at her leg, which had been treated and re-bandaged, Luo Zai Shui replied after a few words, "I came from Xianyun Peak and encountered a demonic beast on the way. I was accidentally scratched. Thank you... May I ask your name?"
The woman smiled and replied, "I take my husband's surname, Shen, and everyone calls me Madam Shen. You can just call me Sister-in-law Shen. May I ask how you should address me, young lady?"
"Thank you very much, Sister-in-law Shen. My surname is Luo, and my given name is Zai Shui."
"On the Water? On the Water's Edge? What a beautiful name! I overheard my younger brother reading a few lines the other day, and just from the name, I know she's a beauty. Aren't your parents worried about you being out there all alone? It's too dangerous for a young lady to be all alone. Although you seem quite capable in a fight, it's still not safe..."
Luo Zai Shui smiled but didn't reply; she didn't dare reveal too much.
Madam Shen didn't care and continued her rambling: "Miss, do you have any other relatives here? If not, why don't you rest here for a few days? Your injury won't heal in less than ten days to half a month..."
Luo Zai Shui noticed that although the house was large, it was dilapidated in many places. Even the bowl used to serve her chicken soup had several chips. It seemed that the family was not wealthy. She thought that if she stayed here, she would probably cause them a lot of trouble. So she asked, "Sister-in-law, do you know how to get to Xianyun Peak? I am a disciple of Xianyun Peak. I need to return to the sect as soon as possible, otherwise my master will worry."
"Xianyun Peak?" Madam Shen pondered for a moment. "I'm just a woman, I haven't seen much of the world. Let me ask for you, Ayan—Ayan—"
She suddenly raised her voice, and before long, a young man dressed in coarse clothes appeared at the door.
"Sister-in-law, did you call me?"
The boy was handsome, no more than thirteen or fourteen years old, with a stern face. For some reason, Luo Zai Shui thought of Ji Ting Han at fourteen, who looked just like him now.
Suddenly, Madam Shen took her hand and explained to him, "This young lady is going to that Xianyun Peak, do you know where it is?"
The young man frowned and replied, "I don't know. I'll go to the escort agency and ask Mr. Yang later. He knows a lot about things, so he might know."
"Okay, thank you for your help."
Meeting the boy's gaze, Luo Zai Shui inexplicably sensed a hint of hostility, which dissipated before she could figure out the reason for it.
Luo Zai Shui was exhausted and didn't want to think anymore, so she let him be.
