Chapter 43 Deep in the jungle, surrounded by snakes
Ning Yao took her wet underwear back to the fire.
Even though the two had already engaged in the most intimate acts, Wen Tingye was still a stranger to Ning Yao. She felt very uncomfortable drying her underwear in front of a stranger as if nothing had happened.
She and Wen Tingye were separated only by a simple frame made of tree branches, and the fire under the frame was burning brightly, with bright red flames dancing in the air and occasionally a few sparks flying out. Wen Tingye had only gathered dry firewood, so there was very little smoke after it was lit.
It must be said that Wen Tingye is indeed a veteran of survival, able to find dry branches even on such a damp, deserted island at sea.
Staring at the half-dry men's underwear on the tree branch rack, Ning Yao awkwardly rubbed her own underwear with her fingers, thinking about how to dry them without Wen Tingye's knowledge.
How about we create another fire?
That's a good idea. There are plenty of dry branches anyway; she can just pick some up and move them aside.
Ning Yao pursed her lips, thinking, and was about to take action when she noticed that the man sitting opposite her suddenly stood up.
Ning Yao subconsciously shrank back, reflexively staring at Wen Tingye with a wary look, worried that he would take advantage of her.
"I'll go find something to eat. You stay by the fire and don't wander off." After saying that, Wen Tingye turned and walked into the depths of the forest. His high-quality white shirt contrasted sharply with the desolation of the deserted island.
Ning Yao realized that Wen Tingye had left on his own initiative because he saw that she was embarrassed, leaving her alone.
I originally thought Wen Tingye was a petty and arrogant man, but I didn't expect him to be quite a gentleman in these details.
As Ning Yao watched Wen Tingye's retreating figure, she couldn't help but recall the white figure she had seen when she fell into the sea, feeling desperate and helpless.
He was clearly one of the five most prestigious families in the capital, and he was clearly the CEO of the Wen family.
Despite his noble status, he jumped into the sea for someone insignificant, risking his life.
Ning Yao couldn't figure out what Wen Tingye was thinking. Since ancient times, merchants have been driven by profit, but what did Wen Tingye want from her?
The drying of the clothes went very smoothly. Once the clothes were completely dry, Ning Yao quickly put them on so that she wouldn't have to go into the grove to change clothes again when Wen Tingye returned.
Wen Tingye's underwear was now dry; if it remained on the shelf, it would burn if the temperature got too high.
At that time, Wen Tingye's underwear will probably be in a state of being completely exposed.
Thinking of this, Ning Yao burst out laughing, which was rather unkind.
Out of gratitude to Wen Tingye, her savior, she carefully took off his underwear, folded it, and placed it on a nearby rock so that he could wear it when he returned.
Ning Yao kept the fire burning and, at the right moment, threw in a few more pieces of dry firewood to conserve as much dry branches as possible.
The cell phone and other communication devices had long since fallen into the sea, so Ning Yao had no way of knowing how long Wen Tingye had been gone. She could only look at the sky and judge by her intuition.
Time passed second by second, but Wen Tingye still showed no sign of returning.
Ning Yao sat cross-legged by the fire, covered her mouth and yawned again. As the dry branches were almost burned out, the unease in her heart grew stronger.
Could that scoundrel have run into some danger?
This deserted island doesn't look very big. Even if you walk around it, you should be back by now. How come there's been no sign of anyone for so long?
Ning Yao got up, patted the ash off her pants, looked at the deep and desolate forest path, hesitated for a moment, and then walked quickly in the direction Wen Tingye had left.
All around were withered trees and rotten leaves, or mud, and occasionally a few hoarse bird calls could be heard, which made one's scalp tingle.
Ning Yao walked and looked around, but she still couldn't see Wen Tingye. She became more and more anxious, thinking that something had happened to Wen Tingye.
After walking for a while, Ning Yao caught sight of Wen Tingye squatting on a patch of mud not far away, his back to her. Although his posture was a bit strange, at least he could still move and there was no blood on his body.
Knowing that Wen Tingye was still alive, Ning Yao finally felt at ease. Just as she was about to speak, Wen Tingye noticed her first. Before he could even turn his face, he suddenly scolded her.
"Don't come any closer!"
Ning Yao didn't know why Wen Tingye was so nervous. She stood still as instructed, but her stepping motion was obviously noticed by something around her. They crawled quickly on the ground, their bodies twisting and turning in an S-shape, and approached her directly.
Several snakes, each as thick as a baby's arm, led countless thin, long snakes; the sheer density of the snake swarm was enough to send chills down one's spine.
There was nowhere for Ning Yao to hide. The black snake at the front suddenly leaped up, its mouth open, its scarlet forked tongue flicking out, and viciously lunged at Ning Yao's thigh. Its two sharp fangs pierced her delicate skin, and the sound of tearing flesh accompanied by intense pain made Ning Yao unable to control her fear any longer. Her lips trembled, and she screamed.
Wen Tingye cursed under his breath, immediately threw away the wild berries he had found, turned around and stepped barefoot into the pile of snakes. He leaped towards Ning Yao, pinning her down to protect her, and then pinched the snakes' vital spot.
The snake, in pain, released its grip and was tossed far away by Wen Tingye.
Wen Tingye hastily crushed the balsam flowers he was carrying and quickly applied them to Ning Yao's body.
Ning Yao's lips turned pale with pain, but she forced herself not to make a sound. The snake swarm was already difficult enough to deal with, and she was afraid that the noise would attract other wild animals on the deserted island, which would mean certain death for her and Wen Tingye.
Feeling Wen Tingye's large hands caressing her body, smearing her with balsam powder, Ning Yao's heart pounded wildly involuntarily, her body went limp, and her ears turned bright red.
The snakes, smelling the strong sulfur odor emanating from the two individuals, dared not approach and retreated.
Ning Yao breathed a sigh of relief. At this moment, she realized that she was nestled in Wen Tingye's arms, and Wen Tingye's other arm was wrapped behind her head, his palm supporting her head. It was obviously an emergency reaction when he pounced on her earlier, to prevent her from hitting her head and getting hurt.
Before Ning Yao could say anything, Wen Tingye pulled her up to sit up, his dark, deep eyes fixed on the wound on Ning Yao's thigh.
Wen Tingye's legs were long and strong, with his knees slightly bent, while Ning Yao was sitting in Wen Tingye's lap, her waist tightly held by him.
Wen Tingye used one hand to tear his shirt, then used his fingers to rip the fabric into strips and wrap them around the edge of Ning Yao's thigh wound to bandage it.
After doing all this, he silently picked up Ning Yao and carried her out of the snake swarm with his upright posture.
Both he and Ning Yao had fragments of balsam sap on their bodies, which kept the snakes away. They just curled up on the ground, constantly flicking their tongues and making terrifying hissing noises.
