Chapter 28 Prelude to Parting

As autumn winds picked up and leaves fluttered down, the city felt desolate and chilly. Shen Yichen and Lin Youran walked side by side on their way home, their steps heavy, both seemingly burdened with worries. While they had made considerable progress in their respective careers recently, they also faced unprecedented challenges and choices.

Lin Youran's novel writing gradually entered a bottleneck period. She found that as her reputation grew, readers' expectations of her also increased, which put unprecedented pressure on her writing. Shen Yichen's legal career reached a crucial turning point. A renowned international law firm extended an offer to him, inviting him to join as a senior partner. One weekend evening, the two sat on the living room sofa. An unimportant program was playing on the television, but their attention was completely elsewhere. Lin Youran broke the silence first: "Yichen, have you heard? That international law firm…"

Shen Yichen nodded, his gaze deep: "Yes, I received their invitation. You Ran, I..." He hesitated, seemingly finding it difficult to speak.

Lin Youran looked at him, her heart filled with mixed emotions. She understood, of course, how important this opportunity was to Shen Yichen, but at the same time, she worried that this decision would distance them from each other. "Yichen, do you want to go?" Her voice was soft yet firm.

Shen Yichen took a deep breath and frankly expressed his thoughts: "You Ran, I admit this opportunity is very tempting to me. But I also know that once I choose to accept it, our lives will change drastically. I'm worried..." He was worried that he would neglect Lin You Ran because of work, and that their relationship would fade due to the test of distance and time.

Lin Youran grasped Shen Yichen's hand, her eyes shining with unwavering determination: "Yichen, go ahead. I support you. I know this has always been your dream. And I believe our relationship is strong enough to withstand any test."

Shen Yichen looked at Lin Youran, a warm feeling welling up in his heart. He held her hand tightly and said affectionately, "Youran, thank you. I will try my best to balance work and relationships and won't let you down."

However, reality is always crueler than imagination. After joining the new law firm, Shen Yichen's workload increased dramatically, often working overtime until late at night, and even having no time to rest on weekends. He spent less and less time with Lin Youran, and their communication dwindled. Although Lin Youran understood Shen Yichen's hardships, her sense of loss grew stronger day by day.

Meanwhile, Lin Youran's novel writing also ran into difficulties. She tried to find inspiration through travel and reading, but with little success. She began to doubt her writing ability and even considered giving up. She didn't know if she could continue on this path.

One evening, Lin Youran sat alone at her desk, gazing blankly at the night sky outside the window. She picked up a pen, wanting to write something, but found her thoughts a jumbled mess. A sudden wave of intense frustration washed over her, and tears welled up in her eyes. Just then, Shen Yichen called.

"You Ran, are you alright?" Shen Yichen's voice carried a hint of weariness and concern.

Lin Youran tried to compose herself, not wanting Shen Yichen to worry: "I'm fine, just a little tired."

Upon hearing this, Shen Yichen felt a pang of guilt: "You Ran, I'm sorry. I've been too busy lately and have neglected you. Once I'm done with this, I'll definitely spend more time with you."

Lin Youran forced a smile: "It's okay, Yichen. Your work is important. I can manage on my own."

However, after hanging up the phone, Lin Youran felt an even stronger sense of loss. She realized that the distance between her and Shen Yichen was gradually widening, and this distance wasn't just in time and space. She began to consider whether she should make some changes to save the relationship.

After careful consideration, Lin Youran decided to temporarily put aside her writing and visit Shen Yichen in his city. She wanted to show him through her actions that no matter how busy or tired they were, their relationship was always the most important thing.

When Lin Youran appeared before Shen Yichen, he was both surprised and moved. He hugged her tightly, as if trying to meld her into his own body: "Youran, what brings you here?"

Lin Youran smiled at him and said, "I missed you, so I came to see you. And I also want to tell you that no matter how busy or tired we are, our relationship is always the most important thing."

Upon hearing this, Shen Yichen felt a surge of warmth in his heart. He held Lin Youran's hand tightly and said affectionately, "Youran, thank you. I know I've neglected you during this time. I will try my best to balance work and relationships and won't let you feel lonely anymore."

In the days that followed, Shen Yichen and Lin Youran worked together to try and rekindle their once innocent and pure feelings. They traveled together, cooked together, and watched movies together, enjoying each other's company and warmth. Although work remained busy, they learned to find balance amidst their busy schedules, allowing their love to blossom in the little things of life.

This experience made them realize more deeply that although growth is accompanied by challenges and choices, as long as they join hands and work together, they will surely be able to create a wonderful life for themselves. And that youthful ten-year promise will become their most precious memory and belief.
