Chapter 2473: Leisurely Daily Life in the Small Town
The elderly woman hadn’t yet rejected the offer when the female traveler came over to support her. "I was just about to go into the town, why don’t we walk together?"The elderly woman pulled her hand away, tapped her leg to indicate she had no issues, and said, "I’ll be getting picked up by a flying device later."
The technology in this district was advanced enough to support such convenient life tools; just by using her terminal to ask for help, a flying device would soon arrive. It even had its own monitors to perform a preliminary diagnosis to decide whether she needed to go to the hospital, and if not, it would take her straight home.
The elderly woman thanked them for their kindness and took the basket from Xu Huo’s hands.
Watching her bend over and carry the basket down the mountain alone, the female traveler remarked, "Some old folks are just strange like that. They don’t like interacting with people, nor do they enjoy convenient gadgets, relying more on their own legs and hands."
"Don’t worry. If there’s ever a real problem, emergency devices will get them to the hospital for treatment immediately."
Xu Huo nodded, asked the traveler for some advice about nuclear carving skills, and then left the mountain top.
At the foot of the mountain, Girl in the painting suddenly appeared. She had no cats with her anymore, but there were several little balls made from clumps of cat fur—her spoils of war.
Of course, her plucking of cat fur displeased some people, especially when she showed off the balls; some even snidely remarked "no manners" not far away.
Girl in the painting heard but ignored them, cheerfully telling Xu Huo how she drove away the cats, saying that the cats actually wanted to steal her medals, not the fish jerky.
That was indeed a bit unusual. Back in the town, Xu Huo asked Girl in the painting to bring out her medals for different cats to sniff.
Cats, unlike Girl in the painting, liked any medal, rubbing up against them persistently, some even starting to drool.
This sparked Xu Huo’s curiosity once more about what materials the Medal of the Radiant Gentleman was made from. It’s one thing for Girl in the painting to like it, but now even the cats in District 001 like it, which hadn’t happened before...
Watching his gaze linger on the medals, Girl in the painting guardedly pressed the medals against her chest, mouthing the words: "They’re mine."
"They’re yours," Xu Huo chuckled. "But the fact that both you and these evolved cats like them suggests the materials used might be special. Perhaps they even assist evolution."
That’s why they instinctively gravitate towards the medals.
Girl in the painting didn’t know, but once the medals were in her possession, she certainly wasn’t going to give them up, quickly tucking them away again.
"Forget it, we’ll talk about this later." Xu Huo planned to explore the town and meanwhile bought Girl in the painting a bottle of specially made perfume.
After shaking off the cat pack completely, they had plenty of time to leisurely explore the entire town.
Unexpectedly, the weather soon turned cloudy, and it started raining around dinner time. Unable to continue their walk, Xu Huo found a place to stay near the town center; from the room’s window, he could see Cat Whisker Fruit Mountain.
Rain blurred everything as some clouds floated up to the mountain’s peak; Girl in the painting happily snapped a photo and then circled the mountain and clouds, "Doesn’t that look like a cat’s head?"
Xu Huo glanced over, "I thought you didn’t like cats?"
"Just looking, why wouldn’t I like them?" Girl in the painting replied matter-of-factly, "As long as they’re not bothering me."
"Meow!" As they were talking, a cat appeared on the balcony next door with an unadorned cat whisker fruit at its feet. It nudged the fruit forward, clearly intending to give it to them.
"You’re not trying to trade this for a medal, are you?" Xu Huo raised his hand to pull the fruit towards himself and give it a closer sniff, finding it did have a bit of a scent.
The mutated, more beautiful and larger cow-cat jumped from the windowsill into the room, shook off the water on its body, familiarly jumped onto the sofa, and lay down, its green eyes fixated on them.
Trading a cat whisker fruit for accommodation isn’t bad at all.
Girl in the painting took a video of the cat from afar, nodded with satisfaction, then lifted the cow-cat off and lay down herself.
The cow-cat protested with a dissatisfied meow, but wisely moved to sleep on the footstool beside her.
"It must understand what I’m saying, right?" Girl in the painting asked Xu Huo.
"Why don’t you try asking it?" Xu Huo replied nonchalantly.
Girl in the painting posed some questions she thought were simple, like recognizing objects or colors, but the cow-cat showed no reaction, glancing at her before averting its gaze.
With a mind operating differently, Girl in the painting didn’t think such simple questions were beyond its understanding; rather, she deemed her questions too elementary. So she thought for a moment and asked, "Do you know how to clear the ’Journey of the Cat Whisker Fruit’ instance?"
A difficulty spike like that?
Xu Huo looked at the cow-cat; it narrowed its eyes, seemingly disdainful, then shifted to a position farther away from Girl in the painting.
Undeterred, Girl in the painting continued to press, asking varied questions like whether it knew which cat whisker fruit looked the best or the most unique or if it knew which cat whisker fruit was planning to travel far... Her questions were quite imaginative.
Amidst a barrage of single-sided questions, Xu Huo slept through the night and woke to daylight the next day.
The weather hadn’t cleared the next day, but travelers were already milling about; Girl in the painting and the cow-cat were nowhere to be found in the room. After quickly freshening up, Xu Huo went downstairs for breakfast.
Bubble Bean and Ling Ling were halfway through their meal, waving for him to join them. "It’s meal time, more people come to eat, we’ll squeeze in."
Xu Huo sat down and signaled toward a table in the corner, "What’s going on there?"
Three players were seated there, occasionally casting unfriendly glances at them.
"My fault," Ling Ling said. "Yesterday, while searching for clues, I had a disagreement with a local player. That family is quite influential, assuming ulterior motives on my part, so a few players have come. It’s not a big deal, as we’ll soon be leaving the town."
Xu Huo nodded, as the food was being served, another group entered the restaurant, led by an ordinary person. The four newcomers were obviously acquainted with the three in the corner; after exchanging glances, both sides started walking towards Xu Huo and his group.
"Mind if I sit for a while?" A bespectacled middle-aged man sat directly in the only empty seat next to them, not particularly politely, looking at Ling Ling. "Madam, yesterday you took a cat whisker fruit from my family’s elderly gentleman’s yard, an item he cherishes most dearly, and it’s also a keepsake left by our departed old lady. If you could, we kindly ask you to return it."
"Besides, I don’t think that cat whisker fruit can help you clear the game."
